business review and appraisal
This new grant has now been launched by DEFRA, enabling farmers and rural entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses.

Businesses will competitively bid for grants between £25,000 and circa £1 million each, from a total funding pot of £60 million. Successful applicants will receive up to 40% funding in five key areas of farm competiveness, agri-food, tourism, forestry, and micro enterprise support. This means at least 60% will need to be funded privately.

Eligible applicants include farmers, rural based enterprises, forestry contractors, woodland owners, horticultural businesses, rural growth networks and not for profit companies.

The first round of funding is now open for outline applications until the end of April. There will then be a period of up to 8 weeks for feedback from DEFRA, after which a full application may then be invited. This will be more in depth and require like-for-like quotations and other supporting evidence.

The outline application forms will be assessed according to the theme priorities described in the grant handbook are, value for money and deliverability. The key questions involve approximately 2000 to 3000 words in total, together with project costs forecasted over 3 years. Applicants are required to show a breakdown of profit and loss and balance sheet information for the previous 3 years. All outputs such as jobs created or products generated should also be included.

The micro enterprise support (for businesses with fewer than 10 employees) will be dedicated to high growth/high value sectors in Rural Growth Network areas only. These areas are set to be announced in March.

Rural Renaissance is currently working with clients on a wide selection of Rural Economy Grant applications and would be pleased to assist further businesses looking to make use of the grant.
